Overview

Some forts impress with their height. Others with their difficulty. Sudhagad leaves a lasting impression through its history, vast landscape, and timeless atmosphere.

Hidden in the lush forests of Raigad district, Sudhagad Fort—also known as Bhorapgad—is one of the most historically significant hill forts in Maharashtra. After capturing the fort, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is believed to have considered it as a potential capital of the Maratha Empire before ultimately choosing Raigad. Even today, as you walk through its majestic entrance, expansive plateau, ancient structures, and the peaceful Bhorai Devi Temple, it is easy to understand why this fort held such importance.

The Sudhagad Fort Trek from Pune is a perfect blend of history, nature, and adventure. The trail begins from the picturesque village of Thakurwadi and gradually ascends through dense forests, rocky pathways, and refreshing monsoon landscapes before opening onto one of the largest fort plateaus in the Sahyadris. Unlike many steep summit climbs, Sudhagad rewards trekkers with a relatively gradual ascent, making it an excellent choice for beginners, families with trekking experience, and anyone looking to enjoy the beauty of the Western Ghats without attempting an extremely challenging climb.

During the monsoon, the route transforms into a vibrant green paradise. Seasonal streams, mist-covered forests, carpets of wildflowers, and cool mountain breezes make every step enjoyable. The fort itself comes alive with lush grasslands, ancient water cisterns filled with fresh rainwater, and panoramic views stretching across the surrounding Sahyadri ranges.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Sudhagad is its remarkably preserved architecture. The impressive Mahadarwaja (main entrance) still stands proudly, welcoming visitors much as it did centuries ago. The sacred Bhorai Devi Temple, the remains of the historic Pant Sachiv Wada, old granaries, bastions, water reservoirs, and defensive structures offer glimpses into the fort's strategic importance during the Maratha era. Every structure has a story, making the trek as much a journey through history as an outdoor adventure.

At प्रवासवेडे (Prawasvede), we believe every fort has stories waiting to be discovered. Our Sudhagad Fort Trek is designed to offer much more than simply reaching the summit. Throughout the journey, our trek leaders share fascinating historical narratives, explain the fort's architecture, discuss its strategic significance, and help participants appreciate the rich cultural heritage that makes Maharashtra's forts so extraordinary.
