Overview

Some trails take you to a fort. Others take you across an entire landscape.

The Chandragad to Arthur’s Seat Trek is a demanding traverse through the rugged Javali region of the Sahyadris, connecting Chandragad Fort with the dramatic escarpments of Arthur’s Seat near Mahabaleshwar.

Beginning at Dhawale village, the route climbs to Chandragad before continuing through forested sections, rugged ridgelines and the landmark of Bhairichi Ghumti. The trail then progresses towards Gadhavacha Maal, where the landscape opens up towards Arthur’s Seat.

This is not a simple ascent-and-descent trek. It is a long, point-to-point journey that calls for sustained endurance, careful footing, route awareness and a willingness to spend most of the day on the trail.

With Prawasvede, the journey is about more than covering distance. It is an opportunity to experience the terrain of Javali, understand the relationship between its forts, forests and mountain passes, and explore the Sahyadris with greater awareness.

Come prepared for a long day in the mountains. Leave with a deeper understanding of the landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How difficult is the Chandragad to Arthur’s Seat Trek?

This is a tough, high-endurance trek meant only for regular trekkers with good physical fitness and prior experience on long, demanding trails.

The route involves sustained walking, exposed and slippery sections, steep terrain and a humid environment. This is not suitable for beginners, occasional trekkers or anyone looking for a leisurely outdoor experience.

2. Is this trek suitable for beginners?

No. This trek is strictly recommended for regular trekkers who are comfortable with long hours of continuous walking and challenging trail conditions.

Having completed a few easy treks is not sufficient preparation. Participants should have prior experience on demanding Sahyadri trails and be confident navigating uneven, steep and exposed terrain.

3. What are the trail conditions like?

The trail includes exposed and slippery sections. Until we reach Bhairichi Ghumti, the route passes through a humid landscape surrounded by cliffs, making the initial stretch particularly demanding.

Footing, balance, endurance and concentration are essential throughout the trek. Trail conditions may vary with the weather, and participants must follow the trek leader's instructions at all times.

4. Is drinking water available along the route?

No. There is no dependable water source along the trail.

Participants must carry sufficient drinking water for the entire trek from the start. Water requirements vary with individual hydration needs, weather and walking pace. Do not assume that water will be available for refilling en route.

Please assess your hydration needs carefully before joining and avoid relying on other participants to carry your water.

5. Is external support available during the trek?

No. Once we enter the trail, there is no external support available along the route.

Participants must be self-sufficient with their personal essentials, drinking water, food as instructed, and any required medication. In case of fatigue, injury or an emergency, assistance and evacuation may be difficult and time-consuming because of the terrain and remoteness.

The group will operate under the trek leader's guidance, but participants must understand that this is a remote route without readily available roadside assistance.

6. How physically demanding is this trek?

The trek requires high endurance and the ability to maintain a steady pace over a prolonged period in a humid environment. Exposed terrain and slippery sections add to the physical and mental demands.

Participants should be prepared for a long day on the trail, manage their energy sensibly and follow the group's pace and instructions. Please do not join based solely on enthusiasm or the desire to visit Arthur's Seat.

7. What should I carry for this trek?

Carry the essentials required for a demanding, self-supported trek:

  • Sufficient drinking water for the entire route.

  • The food and energy snacks specified by Prawasvede.

  • Proper trekking shoes with reliable grip.

  • A suitable backpack, rain protection when required, and clothing appropriate for the conditions.

  • Personal medication and any essential individual supplies.

  • A charged mobile phone, while understanding that network coverage may be unreliable.

The final event-specific packing list will be shared before departure. Do not compromise on water, footwear or essential personal supplies.

8. Can I join if I am not a regular trekker but exercise regularly?

General fitness alone may not be enough. This route requires experience with prolonged trekking and the ability to handle exposed, slippery and remote trail conditions.

If you have not previously completed demanding, long-duration treks, this event is not the right choice. We recommend choosing a less demanding Prawasvede event and building your experience progressively.

9. What happens if the weather or trail conditions become unsafe?

Safety takes priority over completing the route. The trek leader may modify the pace, alter the plan or call off the trek depending on weather, trail conditions, group fitness and other safety considerations.

Participants must follow the trek leader's decisions. Joining the event does not guarantee that the entire route will be completed.

10. What should I know before registering?

Please register only if you understand and accept the physical demands and remote nature of this traverse.

This trek is intended for regular trekkers who are prepared for high endurance demands, exposed and slippery terrain, humid conditions, limited opportunities for assistance and no dependable water sources along the trail.

If you are looking for an easy trek, a first-time trekking experience or a route with frequent support points, please choose another event.
