What if your next night outdoors was spent watching for fleeting streaks of light across the night sky?
Join Prawasvede for a special overnight experience centred around the Geminid meteor shower, one of the most prominent annual meteor showers. As Earth passes through a stream of debris associated with asteroid 3200 Phaethon, some of these particles enter our atmosphere and create the brief streaks of light we call meteors.
Learn the science behind meteor showers, understand how to observe them, and explore the night sky with guidance from an astronomy expert. The evening will combine sky orientation, guided meteor watching and discussions about the celestial phenomena above us.
Settle into a tented overnight stay near Pune, share a meal outdoors and spend time observing the sky at a pace that leaves room for curiosity and discovery.
This is not simply a night of looking for shooting stars. It is an opportunity to understand what you are watching—and to experience a remarkable astronomical event with greater awareness.
Look up. Stay curious. Experience the Geminids with Prawasvede.
Please note: Meteor sightings depend on shower activity, cloud cover, visibility, local light pollution and other observing conditions. Neither clear skies nor a specific number of meteors can be guaranteed.
Choose Your Stargazing Date
Join us on either 12–13 December or 13–14 December 2026 for an overnight experience centred on the Geminid meteor shower.
The Geminids are active across both dates, with the predicted peak on the night of 13–14 December. Actual meteor visibility depends on observing conditions, and sightings cannot be guaranteed.
FAQs
1. Where does the Geminid Meteor Shower Experience take place?
The experience takes place at a campsite in the Mankani area, near Pune, in the Sahyadri region. The exact location and directions will be shared with registered participants.
2. What is the Geminid meteor shower?
The Geminids are an annual meteor shower that occurs in December when Earth passes through debris associated with asteroid 3200 Phaethon. As tiny particles enter Earth’s atmosphere, they produce brief streaks of light called meteors, often known as “shooting stars.”
The Geminids are known for producing bright meteors and are among the strongest annual meteor showers. In 2026, they are expected to be active from 4 to 17 December, with the predicted peak on the night of 13–14 December.
3. Will we definitely see Geminid meteors?
No. Meteor sightings depend on the shower’s activity, cloud cover, sky darkness, local light pollution and visibility. We cannot guarantee clear skies or a specific number of meteors during the experience.
The programme is designed to help you understand the phenomenon and make the most of the available observing conditions.
4. Do I need prior knowledge of astronomy?
No prior astronomy knowledge is required. The experience is suitable for curious beginners as well as people who already enjoy observing the night sky. The astronomy session will introduce the Geminids and explain how to observe meteors.
5. Can I attend with my family?
The experience is planned for adults and families. The minimum age for children and any supervision requirements will be specified in the event details. Please confirm these before booking if you are attending with children.
6. Is this experience only about watching meteors?
Meteor watching is the central focus of this special event. The programme also includes an expert-led astronomy session, night-sky orientation, guided discussions and telescope observation of suitable celestial objects where conditions permit.
Unlike a general stargazing session, this experience allocates dedicated time to observing the Geminid meteor shower.
7. What can I see through the telescope?
The telescope session is separate from meteor watching. The objects available for observation depend on the date, time, weather, sky conditions and equipment. The astronomy expert will guide the session based on what is observable that night. Specific planets, star clusters or other objects cannot be guaranteed in advance.
Meteors are best observed with the naked eye because they can appear across a wide area of the sky.
8. What happens if the sky is cloudy?
Cloud cover or poor visibility can limit or prevent meteor and celestial observation. The team will adapt the programme where possible, but alternative activities cannot guarantee an equivalent observing experience.
Please review the event’s weather-related cancellation, rescheduling and refund policy before booking.
9. Is accommodation included?
Yes. One night of tent accommodation on a three-person-sharing basis is included. Details of sleeping arrangements, bedding and washroom facilities will be provided in the final event information.
10. Are meals included?
Welcome snacks and tea, dinner on Day 1 and breakfast on Day 2 are included. Other meals and personal refreshments are not included unless stated otherwise in the event inclusions.
11. Is transport from Pune included?
No. Participants are expected to reach the campsite independently. Group transport may be coordinated separately, subject to availability and confirmation.
12. Do I need a telescope or camera?
No personal telescope is required. Guided meteor watching is done with the naked eye, and any telescope observation will be part of the scheduled astronomy session.
A camera or smartphone is optional if you wish to try night-sky photography. A tripod can be helpful, but results depend on your equipment, photography skills and sky conditions.
13. What should I carry?
Carry warm layers suitable for a December night, comfortable closed footwear, a personal water bottle, any required medication and a flashlight or headlamp. A camera and tripod are optional. The final packing list will be shared before the event.
14. When does the programme end?
The experience concludes on the morning of Day 2 after breakfast and the scheduled morning activities. Participants arrange their own return journey unless separate transport has been confirmed.
15. Is this the same as the regular overnight stargazing experience?
No. The regular overnight stargazing experience focuses on general night-sky exploration, astronomy and telescope observation. This special edition is centred on the Geminid meteor shower, with dedicated time for meteor watching and understanding the science behind it.
16. How do I book?
Select an available date on the Prawasvede event page and follow the booking instructions. If you have questions about age eligibility, accommodation, transport or the event schedule, contact the Prawasvede team before booking.
